Emperors originally ruled the government, they were considered gods. Shoguns controlled samurai warriors and also the country. In 1867 the emperor Mutsuhito regained power from the shoguns.
The capital of Japan is Tokyo. As of October 1, 2000 the population of Tokyo was 12. 059 million, or 9.5% of Japan's total population.
