Sumo Judo and Kendo are martial arts that are considered the most popular sport in Japan. Golf and Baseball have gained popularity from the west. The most popular leisure activity is gardening.


Television is extremely popular in Japan. Almost every home has a TV set. The average time watching TV is 3 hours a day. Japan has its own TV channel with no commercials. Each homeowner pays a certain amount to sponsor 2 commercial free TV stations. According to a book I read some of the new TV's have a button to switch the subtitles from English to Japanese.

Kendama=wooden stick and ball Kendama is a wooden toy consisting of a wooden stick with one end sharpened, the other end shaped like a dish, and a ball with a hole in it connected to the stick by string. The object is to balance the ball on the dish part and to stick it on the sharp end of the stick.


Tako-kite Tako in Japanese means kite. Most Takos are like square-shaped paper, on which Japan's historical heroes or characters are painted.


 

Sense of honor


A strong cultrual tradition of honor - honoring their elders, honoring one another and honoring themselves has been woven into the fabric that is Japan.
